The Blessed Water of Zam-Zam By Isma'il M. Bello

Zam Zam Well
Zam Zam Well |
The name Zam zam was said to have originated from the phrase, Zame zame (from her Coptic tone of Egypt) meaning stop flowing. Imam Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawzayyah, may Allah have mercy on him, said; “Zam zam water is the best and noblest of all water”.

This is needed truth about Zam zam water which has historical root right from the time of prophet Ibrahim (AS).

According to Islamic tradition the story began when the prophet Ibrahim (AS) took his wife Hajar and their child Isma’il (AS) to barren land from Bilad Al-Sham. Prophet Ibrahim was then acting upon the revelation from Allah (SWT). At that time, Hajar was still nursing and was left at a place where the secret house of Ka’aba is situated today. There was neither dweller nor water in the area.

Prophet Ibrahim (AS) left dates and water skin for Hajar and her child Isma’il (AS) to fend on.As soon as prophet Ibrahim (AS) took them to where he was commanded to take them, he began to leave without uttering a word. Hajar then, followed him and asked; oh Ibrahim! where are you going? Are you going to leave us in this valley where there is neither human nor living creatures? She kept repeating this several times, but prophet Ibrahim (AS) did not answer. Hajar then asked him, “Has Allah commanded you to do so?” He then answered to the affirmative. There upon she said, “Then He will not let us perish”.

Hajar continue to eat and drink from the provisions left for her until it finished and her milk dried up. They (Hajar and Isma’il) grew hungry; the baby became thirsty to an extent that she couldn’t stand the sight. So, she went and stood at Al-Safa, the hill nearest to her and looked down to see if there is someone to help, but there is no one.

She then, climbed down Al-Safa and reached Al-Marwa, stood there and looked around, there was no one to assist, she did that seven times. This later became part of annual Hajj pilgrimage ritual. Hajar searched desperately for water to give her son Isma’il (AS) but couldn’t see trace of it until she reached mount Marwa for the last time, then she heard a sound. This is because; Allahu subhannahu wata’ala has sent His Angel Jibreel to struck the ground with his feet which made water to gush forth from the earth. The exact place was where her baby rubbed his feet against the sand. By the grace of Allah, a pool of water surfaced, and shaped itself into a well.

This is the beginning of the Zam zam well which provides water to millions of people. The well of Zam zam today is more like a small pond about 18 by 14 feet, and it supplies millions of gallons of water throughout the year. One miraculous thing about the well since it came into existence is that it has never dried up, not for once.

It has been observed that, biological growth and vegetation can never be found existing in Zam zam well unlike other wells. As such the water has never been chemically treated or chlorinated.

In 1971, King Faisal came to know about a disturbing letter written by one Egyptian Doctor to European press, claiming that Zam Zam water was not fit for drinking purposes. This was based on his assumption that, since the Ka’aba was a shallow place and located in the center of the city of Makkah, the waste water of the city collecting through the drains fell into the well holding the water.

The king was extremely angry and he immediately ordered for an investigation and simultaneously sends samples of Zam zam water to European laboratories for testing of its portability.

Consequently, the results of the water tested at laboratory at Jeddah and European laboratory were almost found to be identical. The water was found to be portable and fit for human consumption, the outcome of this test made King Faisal to be extremely happy, he then ordered the contradiction of the report in the European press.

The water level of Zam zam is about 323 meters (about 10.59ft) below the surface of the earth. A study has found out that pumping test at 8000 liters/second for more than 24 hours period, showed a drop in water level. When pumping finally stopped the water level recovered only within 11 minutes later. This is indeed a miraculous work of the Supreme Being Allahu subhanahu wata’ala to have an underground at the heart of dry valley.

The water has not shown any sign of shortage or serious drop in its content despite the fact that millions of liters are drawn continuously throughout the year. Another study conducted by an American laboratory showed that there were traces of thirty elements in Zam zam water means of energizing neutrons.

Thus, Analysis of minerals study conducted in the laboratory of the department of water and waste water treatment, the western province Saudi Arabia was able to come up with the following percentages. Calcium 198, Magnesium 43.7, Chloride 335, Sulfur 370, Iron 0.15, Mageneses 0.15, Copper 0.12.Sometimes, people do ask question as to whether Zam zam water has an advantage over other waters, the answer is true, and it has more advantage over all other waters.

The prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, Zam zam water is a lavish meal and a great healer, and Zam zam water is what one intends to drink it for, as such it is use a lot for its medicinal value on sick person. If Allah wills the sick gets well with Allah’s permission.

There were many testimonies from people that have used it for medicinal purpose and Allah in His infinite mercy cured them. Zam zam water is indeed a blessed form of water with lots of benefits which Allah has given to mankind.
