United defeated Abubakar Bukola Saraki (ABS) FC of Ilorin 3-4 on penalties in the final of the NNL Super 4 played at Pantami Stadium, Gombe on Thursday to emerged the best Nigeria National League (NNL) team for the 2015/2016 season.
The victory means the new look Katsina United, who have returned to the top flight of the Nigeria Premier Football League 14 years after they were relegated to the lower division, became the first club from the Katsina State to achieve the feat.
Speaking to LEADERSHIP Weekend sports, the chairman of the club, Alhaji Aminu Balele Kurfi (Dan Arewa) said the victory was made possible by the untiring support from the sports loving governor of the state.
He said the governor and his executive council and as well as the State Assembly ensured that the club never lacked the required financial and moral support.
He commended the governor, his deputy and the good people of Katsina State for their unflinching support, saying the victory in the Super 4 tournament shown that their promotion to the Nigeria premier Football League was not a fluke.
“We dedicate the victory to the sports loving governor of Katsina State, His Excellency, Aminu Bello Masari.
This victory means that our promotion to the NPFL wasn’t a fluke.
“We are really happy that after 14 years in the lower divisions, we are back to where we rightly belong. This is no doubt as a result of the immense support we received from His Excellency, Governor Aminu Bello Masari.
“We had no reason not to gain promotion. Everything we needed to achieve this promotion was provided for us. On our part, we applied the required wisdom to hit our target.
“We were given a target by His Excellency and we worked quietly towards achieving it.
“The deputy governor, members of the State Assembly, State executive members, our fans and the sporting press also deserve commendation for been supportive and we cannot thank them enough,” he stated.
