El Clasico: Lionel Messi and Christiano Ronaldo | |
Lionel Messi and Ronaldo showed a healthy mutual respect despite rumours of a reported dislike for each other, but, they embraced in the Nou Camp tunnel, moments before kick-off.
Whilst that very moment was probably enough to stop the world spinning on it's axis, Ronaldo was then seen speaking to Messi when the Madrid number seven was tasked with marking the little magician for a Barcelona corner during the first half.
A grinning Ronaldo, who was clearly in the mood to antagonise his stern looking opponent, reportedly asked Messi (as quoted by GiveMeSport): “Que pasa?” (What’s up?).
Clearly not in the mood for a chat, the Argentine simply replied: “Tranquilo” ([I’m] calm).
Whilst Messi may have been calm, there's no doubting he is under pressure to retain his Ballon d'Or crown. His rival is the clear favourite for the title after a superlative 2016 that has seen Ronaldo win two European trophies, both domestically with Real Madrid and his national side Portugal.
Both players struggled to make an impact in what was an unusually tight and tactical El Clasico. Sergio Ramos' late header grabbed the visitors a point and cancelled out Luis Suarez's opener for Barcelona.
