Human beings are by nature selfish, Nigerians are not exception. Our selfishness has been the major impediment to achieving a consensus on a variety of issues.
The 1914 amalgamation by Lord Lugard is what joined the North and South together administratively to become a single entity called Nigeria. After all the struggles for Nigerian independence, the desire for one region to politically dominate another has been the trend. This created a number of problems which hindered the actualization of one and prosperous Nigeria, devoid of ethnic and religious cleavages.
Today, the Nigerian quest for national unity, development and prosperity is facing the most difficult challenges of the 21 century, the fallout from the ideal notion that nationalities can coexist peacefully in a divided cum (united environment) is the backbone of the heightened a acrimony. There is so much hatred in the land, we envy the progress and prosperity of one another, we hate each other so much that we causes injury, kill and destroy each others properties, respect for elders has been diminished, so also elders being responsible on the decline, we borrow almost anything western, leaving our culture and traditions at the mercy of their own shadows, our youths turned drug addicts and practitioners of all sorts of heinous acts including armed robbery and kidnapping, sympathy for one another depleting, promises being broken, material relationship and friendships on the rise, laziness and disrespect for our values and laws reigning high. In our leadership, Nigerians gives premium to personal interest over national interest, ensuring equity and justice relegated, funds meant to serve public good ending up in the hands of the privilege few, truancy, indiscipline, wickedness and shortsightedness eating the fabric of our civil and public services, transparency and accountability relegated, bribe giving and taking become the order of the day, contract kickbacks and other corrupt acts consolidated, among several other national problems.
No country in the world will survive a situation where the bulk of her citizens became enemies of themselves, and practically damaging the cardinal principles of nationhood. Nigerian unity, development and prosperity lies with citizens resolve to cede away from the illustrated problems and much more, our years long inculcation, adaptation and adherence to these set of societal problems is the measure impediment to achieving our goal of a united, strong and self reliant nation. This is a living fact that we are the problems to ourselves and the architect of all messes, the hue and cry against the leadership style, system in operations, political turmoil, the negative outcome of some policy decisions, our failure to live happily, peacefully and harmoniously, the security situation, lack of development, international image tarnishing among others are the manifest of our hatched own negative behavior overtime as citizens.
Therefore, to deescalate social tensions and better the existing situation, Nigeria must undergo a radical revolution of values to conquer the giant social problems hindering the country's moving forward, Nigerians must begin the journey of mindset change against negative attitudes towards the society, ourselves, the parents, the children, our neighbours, the larger family, those we shared religious beliefs and those not, coworkers, business partners, schoolmates, our tribesmen and women, other tribal groups and so on, we must all show commitment to change the existing lifestyle for the benefit of ourselves and the country.
