"President Buhari was expected to be very good on security but he failed woefully. His Service Chiefs have outdated the service itself but he retained them despite their disasterous failures."
The gruesome murders of people, in large numbers, mainly reported only by local and social media have been foreseen by many since 2016. The inactions and sheer negligence of President Buhari, and the sincere but terribly dangerous path taken by Governor Aminu Masari towards solving the problems have provided these murders with licence to perpetuate to this level. And they won't stop miraculously. They would only stop when they're addressed.
President Buhari was expected to be very good on security but he failed woefully. His Service Chiefs have outdated the service itself but he retained them despite their disastrous failures. When people were slaughtered across villages in Zamfara, silence was the only reward from the President. When he went to campaign in 2019 in Gusau, he couldn't even condole them. But we have seen how he was panicked when his son had an accident in Abuja. The people killed in these villages are as important as his son. They are also sons to some people. Their life is as precious as the first son.
Absence of mainstream media coverage of these murders have made it easy for President Buhari to go to bed without headache. When there's single death in Southern Nigeria, Buhari will issue condemnation, and same with Garba Shehu and Femi Adesina. They're all afraid to be portrayed as weak as they're by the southern media. But lives of people in the North don't have value since they don't get reported beyond social media. Personally, I believe that President Buhari should resign. If he has a shred of decency, he won't be wearing babbar riga in Aso Rock and beaming with happiness when these deaths are happening daily.
As for Governor Masari, I think his chaos called amnesty was necessitated by the neglect from the Federal Govt. His suspension of vigilantes had made it easy for murderers to ambush people without any resistance. At the state level, all the policies have appeared to help the banditry and kidnappings to continue. Criminals were released and even rewarded by submitting their arms for cash. This has made banditry and kidnappings to continue. People feel like the Govt is only concerned about the wellbeing of criminals. Today, villages are attacked without support from security personnel. Security personnel are in the towns and cities harassing and extorting people for riding motorcycles beyond 7pm. But there's a limit to which people could not be pressed anymore.
As for the elites who kept quiet for whatever reason, it's a choice they have made. They have chosen to remain mute till this problem has consumed us all.
May Allah protect us all.
