Despite the numerous challenges, Katsina has
come a long way, and the progress witnessed over these years is an indication
of our collective unity, determination, and resilience towards a prosperous
future. As I prepare to write some notes about someone I deeply cherished;
suddenly, a short video clip crossed my path on Facebook, reminding me of this
significant milestone in our history.
Indeed, I found it suitable to intertwine my
tribute to the celebration of our state's birthdate. For this reason, I
therefore wish to urge the good people to continue to appreciate our state's
rich heritage, honour our traditions, and work together towards a better
future.
— Late
Hon. Badamasi Kabir Usman
For many years,
especially in the North, the popular word of “Maigida” is synonymous to the
qualities of someone who extends his generous heart beyond the needs of a
needy. In other words, the concept of 'Maigida' may likely take an extended
meaning to reflect a mentor or sponsor, who championed the cause of supporting
people with an opened heart.
In Katsina, late Honourable Badamasi Kabir
Usman, fondly referred to "Maigida" is a royal philanthropist, who
embodied a unique blend of generosity and nobility. His life and philanthropic endeavors
were guided by what I can aptly describe as "royal virtues" — a set
of principles that reflected his commitment to improving the lives of people.
He was a public figure who left an indelible
mark on the hearts of many. Known not only for his political career but also
for his simplicity, compassion, and selflessness. I tried to recall, in this
note, the life and time of a man I consider a true philanthropist. — Kullu
Nafsin za'iqatul maut. "Every soul shall taste death".
The journey of Late Prince Badamasi Kabir Usman into this world was nothing short of astounding. Apart from
his generous nature, humbleness and simplicity are also part of what many
people described on his personality. He could not bear to see people suffering
in his community without using his influence or resources to support them. In
fact, his acts of kindness were not limited to grand gestures; he showed
compassion in everyday interactions, making people feel valued. Every single
day, his premises are thronged by hundreds of people, awaiting to receive his
blessings.
Hon. Badamasi Kabir was born into the
respected Katsina Royal families. Raising up within the confines of the royal
creed, his upbringing was steeped in between Islamic teachings and values,
imparting a sense of responsibility in him. Inherently, he was exposed to the
intricacies of leadership and governance. His father, the late Emir of Katsina,
Alhaji (Dr.) Kabir Usman Nagoggo nurtured in him the ethics of empathy and
respect for all.
Late Badamasi's foray
into politics is motivated by various factors; Amongst which is his genuine
desire to serve his community and make a difference in the lives of the people
he represented. He believed that political power should be harnessed for the betterment
of society, and he embodied this principle throughout his political career.
Consequently, after he climbed a prominent
political ladder, to represent the good people of Katsina Central in the
Federal House of Representatives, his commitment to the welfare of his
constituents greatly increased. Indeed, it was such an inspiring obligations of
late Hon. Badamasi Kabir that led me to be part of his political struggle.
My Political Journey with him started after
seeing my leaflet on his initial aspiration to contest for the gubernatorial
seat in the state. In the year 2006 - 2007, I played a pivotal role under his
guidance. The role assigned was how to promote his candidature via media
publications, with the aim of creating more awareness. At that time, we sought
buying space in some newspapers and other media channels. He believed that
engaging with individuals who can share his vision is fundamentally important
and necessary.
Even though, I look younger at that material
time, but gratefully, Maigida never consider it as a concern. One day, he
requested to meet at the Liyafa Palace Hotel, to discuss some important issues
concerning his political ambition. I may recall that, the meeting was scheduled
in an unconventional hour (mid-night), and it lasted for about 40 minutes.
Those very close to Maigida, knew how occupied he is every day.
During our meetings, we
discussed various aspects of his political plans for governorship seat. At that
very material time, many people didn’t know about his direction. Because we are
not talking about contesting for the House of Reps. We only aimed at gubernatorial
seat, before late Yar’adua made an adjustment and do some political
recalculations on Badamasi’s candidature. Scrupulously, Hon. Badamasi's agenda
for Katsina was transformative and remarkable, especially for youths and
unemployment.
In fact, we held numerous meetings to strategize and coordinate our activities at various locations, including his Dandagoro’s residence, G.R.A and Dutsen-Safe low-cost. There was a time he requested that I should meet him by 7pm at his Sha'iskawa residence for another round of discussions. Unfortunately, the House was crowded with many people. The guard at the gate called Maidoki, said “Shamsu I don’t think you can see Maigida now, due the high number of people awaiting him”. I told him, it was Maigida that asked me to meet him now, as such I must wait for him.
Surprisingly, after like 5 minutes, he stepped
out of his way, and before entering his car, he called my name and directed me
to enter. I still remember a few people who forcefully made a way for Maigida,
due to the large number of people within the premises. These follow-up meetings
demonstrate his commitment to action and his desire to keep the momentum going.
All efforts were aimed at mobilizing support for Badamasi while at the same
time navigating the complex dynamics in the political arena. Because it was
clear to us that Yar’adua has different view on who he was preparing to succeed
him.
Remember, late President Umaru Yar’Adua served
as the governor of Katsina State from 1999 to 2007, and subsequently selected
by President Obasanjo to stand as the PDP’s candidate in the April 2007
Presidential election. Honestly, that time was really tough and critical in our
struggle. Because, at that time former Katsina State Governor, Dr. Ibrahim
Shehu Shema was also picked to contest for Governorship seat, as the successor
to late Umaru Musa Yar'Adua.
One memorable incident occurred during our
meeting at Hajiya Maryam Yar'adua's house (G.R.A). As we gathered around
11:00pm, a car suddenly arrived, in front of the Gate. The Policemen on duty
quickly alerted us that "His excellency" is around. To our
astonishment, the next person to enter was none other than the late President
Yar'adua himself (as governor then). Unknown to us, he’s coming to visit his
daughter (Hajiya Maryam), who was already out to receive her Dad. He smiles at
us, after we greeted him. And, simply said “Sannun ku, Meeting akeyi”? Nobody
could answer or replied to him. We all smiled, and he moves in together with
Hajiya Maryam. I remembered, the meeting was ended and couldn’t hold at that
particular time.
Late Yar'adua is a very humble person and his
deep love for his children, left a lasting impression on us. Despite his high
office, he displayed simplicity and friendliness That unexpected encounter with
a leader (Late Yar’adua) served as a valuable lesson in humility and openness.
Another important personality in that
political movement was Alhaji Kabir Sambo, one of the best friends and
confident to Hon. Badamasi Kabir. He played a pivotal role in coordinating and
planning must of our political activities. His strategic insights and support
were instrumental in our efforts to create awareness and mobilize support for
Badamasi.
Honestly, late Badamasi's ability to connect with people on a personal level and his determinations were qualities that left a lasting impression on me. In the world of politics, the guidance and of individuals like him is essential for shaping the next generation of leaders. My short engagement in his political crusade served as a foundation for my continued involvement in politics, with the hope to uphold the principles of integrity, dedication, and kindness.
Sadly, Honourable
Badamasi Kabir's life was cut short by a protracted illness in London. His
passing was met with an outpouring of grief from all corners of the nation.
Though he’s no longer with us, yet his impact endures in the hearts and minds
of many who were fortunate enough to know him and benefit from his kind
gesture. Honourable Badamasi Kabir's legacy embodied the principles of
generosity and simplicity. His legacy lives on through the lives he touched and
the positive impact he had on Katsina State and the nation as a whole. Innalillahi wa’inaillaihir Raji’un!
As we remember those noble qualities and
philanthropic endeavours of late Alhaji Badamasi Kabir Usman, it is my fervent
hope that the government will recommend for the renaming of certain public
edifice as a fitting tribute to his remarkable influence and service to the
community. Lastly, I pray to Allah to
forgive his shortcomings, bless his families, and grant him eternal rest. Amen!
