It is obvious that the seat of Kano State Deputy Governor Professor Hafizu Abubakar became vacant following his resignation and decamping to People Democratic Party (PDP)
The resignation was not seen as a surprise to many as it is expected to happen particularly with the intense political pressure and disagreements that mounts between Governor Ganduje and his predecessor Sen. Kwankwaso which made the political scenario in APC unpredictable and full of uncertainties. The situation has deepened much and forced Sen. Kwankwaso to dumps ruling APC to PDP.
Another prelude to the resignation was the issue revealed by the Deputy Governor who allegedly raised alarm over political nagging, personal security, entitlements and unpaid allowances accrued to the State government. Though all his complaints are strongly denied by the State government that considered his resignation as the only way for him to pay allegiance to his boss (Kwankwaso) whom he join at PDP, the action which seems to be impossible if the Deputy Governor did not secede himself from APC and forfeit his seat as a second citizen in Kano State. That were the reasons and counter reason between Professor Hafizu and Kano State Government respectively.

What is trending now is the issue of replacement as provided in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The selection of the person to succeed Professor as the next Deputy Governor is a tough task on the neck of Governor Ganduje as the seat has now become fascinating amongst politicians from Kano South and Kano Central Senatorial Zones. for Kano north the seat of the Governor ruled them out of this game of throne.
From Kano South Senatorial zones strong political magnate Hon. Sulaiman Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila ought to be the first person to consider going by 2015 APC primary election, he contested and withdrew for Ganduje and he would have been the Ganduje’s Deputy right from the beginning, but never was as a result of his differences with the then Governor who unilaterally pinpointed Professor Hafizu to be Ganduje’s running mate. Secondly, the serving Secretary to the State government Alhaji Usman Alhaji is another principal contender especially how he has been contesting for Kano Governorship since 1999, however this will move him closer to his dream in 2023. Thirdly, The reinstated Speaker Kano State House of Assembly Hon. Rurum is also an option for the seat of Deputy Governor from Kano South. Another figure that people would be much surprised in my list from Kano South is Mallam Salihu Sagir Takai who is presently a card carrying member of People Democratic Party (PDP), but with the nature of political volatility and defections in Kano, Takai might be an alternative especially to balance the political climax of the Governor, while considering the tough situation he (Takai) might possibly faced in securing PDP governorship ticket, with Kwankwaso now a member of PDP, eventhough he (Takai) is favourite to Kwankwaso for long but he might change his mind to favor Professor Hafizu.
In Kano Central, many politicians might be selected to fill the vacuum created by Professor who happened to come from the zone. Renown politicians like Mallam Ibrahim Muhammad Kankarofi, Alhaji Nasiru Aliko Koki, Sheikh Ibrahim Khaleel, Hon. Yusuf Abdullahi Ata (Former Speaker KNHA). Two serving commissioners; Hon. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, Comrade Muhammad Garba are also Governor’s pets. Likewise Hon. Abdullahi Abbas who come from the same local government with the out gone Deputy Governor is another contender from Kano Central.
From the part of young politicians in Kano especially with the idea of ‘Not too young to Run’ which encourages and boosted the political morales of youths, people like Hon. Dr Baffa Babba Danagundi (Member Kano State House of Assembly), Nasiru Sa’idu Adahama, Salihu Tanko Yakasai and the host of others could be picked by Governor Ganduje.
From the academicians, the Vice Chancellor Kano University of Science and Technology, Professor Shehu Alhaji Musa, Professor Garba Ibrahim Sheka (Chairman KANSIEC) could also be selected to occupy the seat of Deputy Governor the way Dr. A.T Abdallah was selected by Governor Abdu Dawakin Tofa in 1983.
Certainly the seat has continuously attracts many and severals, perhaps the reader and the writer of this piece have interest in it also, but Allah (SWT), the all knower, destined whom to be the next Deputy Governor of Kano State. I pray Allah will make it easy for the people and government of Kano State to get a pious, hardworking and dedicative one, who will work diligently and tremendously towards the development of Kano State and Nigeria at large.
