COVID 19: Between My Government and My People By Mudassir Aliyu Yunusa

"The lockdown cutdown supply chain, destroys businesses, rendered many jobless, crippled transportation and other social services ..."

Nigeria depends much on crude oil as main source of money and revenue drive, failure of our successive governments to diversify the source of income has brought serious problem to the country. Now with current Corona Pandemic which put the entire world into halt, local and international businesses are suffering, economic, social and religious activities bring to standstill, price of crude oil crushed down to less than $20 per barrel, which thrown fear to our government and its people. The stay at home order  by government and the lockdown directive has significant implications on economic, social, religion, political and psychological aspects of human life.

The lockdown cutdown supply chain, destroys businesses, rendered many jobless, crippled transportation and other social services, the pain of poverty, desperation and destitution which culminated into general economic hardship has been revealed. Everyday the rate of investment is drastically falling down, likewise consumption supersede savings, those depend on daily services to earn their living are thrown into fear of the unknown as a result of the policy of Lockdown which is a borrowed idea from more advanced countries, countries that are strong to cater for their citizens and provide basic amenities and other certain privileges in an organize way. It is obviously different in the case of Nigeria. As a matter of fact, our country's development planning has been exposed to be a total failure. Nigeria has been in oil business for more than Fifty years, yet could not provides special palliatives to augment the hard situation created by Corona Pandemic, poverty and hunger bedeviled number of citizens particularly with  the staying at home order.  Both the leaders and the followers are not helping matter, corruption, insincerity of purpose, high intense of kleptomaniac attitudes and greediness are the negative factors that would not allow the system to work properly.

However, Most of our leaders as well as many followers are not ready to contribute positively for the country to attain greatness and development. I am very skeptical about the mentality of our people which has been exposed in this trying time.

The climax of the current situation has exposed Government and the people, so much so that some people want to take the advantage and make their fellow brothers feel disadvantage. Traders with the same stocks in their shops are unfaithfully cheating buyers through extra charging them an exorbitant prices. Some Security agents who are charged to make people comply and restrict movements are shamelessly collecting bribe and give pass to people despite the curfew. Even the pure water sellers/ dealers have increased the price in a hyper way. A black market Fuel sellers doubles the price over and above the regulated pump price. The price of meat per kilogram has forcefully skyrocketed beyond expectation. Cooking gas refillers wants to be rich at the expense of their customers.  What a Country? Almost Everybody except few are unnecessarily making life difficult and miserable to his/her fellow citizens. I begin to think negatively to the extent that my hope on the leaders and the followers has begun to fade away. Are we really ready to support our country in its quests for sustainable development? Wether we like it or not we must plan for our future generation,  We must believe the fact that to waste or destroy the potentialities of attaining development through our attitudes will surely  undermine and compromise the progress  of our people and our country. By so doing the result will be negative  especially in the future days of our children.   To be honest Our attitudes have really gone in parallel to the qualities and attributes put in place to attain development. Are we really sincere to ourselves? Do we really need to change the fortune of our country from bad to good and to better, or rather do we want it to always go in contrary i.e from bad to worse? The situation of Corona Pandemic which appears to be  like a thunderstorm that just comes suddenly and unexpectedly. With this there is higher need if not mandatory to wake up decisively and restrategize our National planning. Our Government must deliberately pave way for proper planning and management of the existing resources through optimum allocation and proper use of the country's treasures.

The main issue is that as depicted by the current situation. I believe, majority of our citizens are eager to compromised their national interest to perpetuate their personal interests as well as their whims and caprices driven by selfish and greediness.

I now realized that both the leaders and the followers must come together and offer their onward sacrifices to repositioning the country which would be difficult for both of them as manifested by their characters and attitudes which are purely unfaithful to the criteria and ways of  bringing positive change to the country.

I hope this Pandemic will serve as a turning point for Government and our People, both should wake up from their long slumbers and work together to rescue  the country from sinking down. We should be ready to face all the challenges that might come as a result of this situation. Nigeria will be great if you and I are honest to ourselves, trustworthy, patriotic and above all let us serve our father land with love, strength and faith to rebrand our nation to a better shape and attain sustainable development.
