The once proud Hausa language, second only after Swahili in Africa, spoken by millions across many countries in West Africa, is now embarrassingly and stupidly reduced to "Ban iya Hausa ba" and "Me ye matasa?" Insecurity in identity is a serious problem. These minds need decolonization urgently. These are people in whom our classed structure has reserved special place in the cultural and political spheres.

The South African writer, Dennis Brutus, once remarks that "if you enslave the minds, you don't really need chains after that." I can't imagine a truer statement.

We should go back to Ngugi's Decolonizing the Mind. We need it to restore our self worth.
