Republican Candidate Donald Trump has been elected as the 45th President of the United States of America, defeating his rival Hillary Clinton who was initially predicted to win.
As at 8:15 am Nigerian time, Trump has won 266 colleges, while Clinton won 218.
This means Trump needs only 4 electoral votes out of the 54 still available. Technically, he is the next US president.
He won key swing states of Florida, North Carolina and Ohio as he succeeds in his long time ambition of “winning the race” to the White House.
Known for his “we will take back our country” comment, the billionaire businessman surpassed expectations and rubbished pollsters projection in Florida, where Hillary Clinton of the Democrats had been expected to win.
But Hillary Clinton’s hopes of a swift victory faded as the Republican picked up a series of states.
Mrs Clinton managed to win the battlegrounds of Virginia and Colorado, but she needed to take Michigan, Nevada, Iowa and Pennsylvania to revive her chances.
Already, Paul Ryan, the House speaker, has called Mr Trump to congratulate him.
Ryan said had “very good conversations” with both Mr Trump and Mike Pence, his running mate.
Meanwhile, Clinton has thanked her supporters via Twitter handle.
“This team has so much to be proud of. Whatever happens tonight, thank you for everything.” She wrote.
